Building Solutions has a long-standing relationship with this school over the past 15 years, with regard to many facilities issues. Their board of directors provided its own volunteer management during the architect selection and design management phases of a major capital expansion, consisting of two buildings, totalling 55,000 sf, some renovation, and significant site amenities. At the conclusion of the pre-construction phase, the volunteer project manager for the school recommended appointment of Building Solutions as the construction-phase project manager.

The Situation
Alcuin School is a growing K-8 program with 500 students and one of the largest Montessori schools in the U.S. It is situated on an 11 acre campus that was largely built in the 1980's. The current construction program consists of a new Middle School, a new Community Building, parking and site improvements, and renovation of other spaces on campus. The school retained Building Solutions to manage an overall project budget, including FFE and owner-furnished items and to serve as their representative with the project team, neighborhood leaders, city officials, and all vendors.
Value Added by Building Solutions
The Middle School building completed in time for occupancy for the fall 2009 term. The Community Building was completed in late 2009. Building Solutions has saved the school approximately $500,000, since the time of its involvement in the project. The savings originated from such special efforts as obtaining peer reviews of waterproofing and HVAC systems, expediting scheduled completion of construction, and managing the contractor's proposed change orders. Alcuin School was awarded "Best in Category" in the Best Architectural Design category by Texas Construction magazine and also achieved LEED Certified status. Alcuin School is among a small group of independent schools in the ISAS region to achieve LEED Certified status.
